About Under-Civilized

These things are always so awkward.  Did I just make it more awkward by pointing that out?  Well to start, I’m a pretty sarcastic person who writes like I speak.  That is if you can consider what I do “writing.”

My name is Stephon Boatwright, a grad school educated political scientist and a hardcore urbanite.  Somewhere along the line I put an indefinite pause on both of the above.  I moved out of New York City and traded my copies of Marx and Nietzsche for trail maps.  Well, that’s a lie.  I still read radical philosophy and who needs a map?!  Hiking, biking, and traveling have become my life, along with working to preserve the natural environment I enjoy so much.

Under-civilized is a play on John Muir’s statement that the “over-civilized” folks are finding themselves free only in the wilderness.  This project is for those of us proud to be under-civilized, refusing to define ourselves by what we have, but by our bond with community and the natural world that makes it possible.  Or, as CCR puts it:

“There’s a place up ahead and I’m goin’ just as my feet can fly; Come away, come away if you’re goin’, leave the sinkin’ ship behind”

Peace, love and ramble one!
